There is definitely such a thing as "too much too soon" in relationships. I'm not just talking about meeting someone's mom on the second date or proposing to someone after only three months of dating. In the first year of dating someone, anything goes for the "too much too soon" label. Just because something is a big gesture doesn't mean it will be appreciated by the person it is being done to. More expensive does not mean more thought went into it, nor does it necessarily make it better. A flashy vacation that includes a lot of activities that your partner shows no interest in is obviously inferior to a thoughtfully planned staycation in your hometown. 

If someone is materialistic, they might be more inclined to think that their partner will be the same way, appreciating expensive gifts simply because they are expensive. In many cases, a partner who thinks that money will buy them love may start to become resentful of the person they're buying gifts for needlessly. Who could forget Mr. Krab's crush on Mrs. Puff…he set aside his cheap ways for love, and that was way too much too soon for Bikini Bottom's resident driving instructor. All she wanted was to go on a walk in the park!!!

By throwing a large about of money her, he becomes the "winner" in the gift Olympics, and takes a form of control/ possession, because she is required to be proportionately grateful (see reaction when she was not grateful).

  • Such an expensive gift might make her feel indebted to you. Some not nice guys might hold it over her as a power move. Even if that was not your intent these things could be bouncing around in her head. When her reaction wasn't what you anticipated you should have apologized for it being a bit much then you could explain why you wanted to give her such an extravagant gift.

  • vastaril Honestly it's probably not so much "oh no, he's going to expect an expensive gift back" as "what does he expect in exchange for this?" (Sual stuff, performative gratitude, wearing it everywhere and painting a "mug me" target on her head as well as risking losing it or he'll pout and whine that she's not still performing gratitude by wearing it everywhere?
